Since his arrival last month, Charles Kushner, the new U.S. ambassador to France, who is also the father of Donald Trump's son-in-law, has kept a low profile. But his first public initiative could strain relations between Paris and Washington.
In a letter addressed to the President of the Republic on Sunday, August 24, he deplores the lack of sufficient action by the French government to combat anti-Semitism. "Statements that vilify Israel and gestures in recognition of a Palestinian state encourage extremists. Anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism. Period," the diplomat wrote.
This criticism comes just days after Benjamin Netanyahu accused Emmanuel Macron of fueling anti-Semitism by calling for recognition of the Palestinian state. The Quai d'Orsay responded in a statement, firmly refuting these accusations.
"The ambassador's allegations are unacceptable. They violate international law, particularly the duty not to interfere in the internal affairs of states," the ministry retorted. Ambassador Charles Kushner will be summoned to the Quai d'Orsay this Monday, August 25, a rare step among allies.
